2007 Can Am Challenge Report

Tue Jun 19, 2007 9:17AM

Can-Am Challenge/RC-Pro Series Race #1 report

With RC-Pro making its first venture into the Canada this was surely going to be a good race. The Can-Am Challenge has grown on its own merit in the three years the Ontario 1/8 On-Road Racing Club has been in existence. Some big names from the Midwest Series crossed the border for their first trip to the challenging layout in Hamilton. This was surely more of a Can-Am Challenge than in the previous year’s races.

Race Report by Scott McDonald

The final round of 1/8th qualifying on Sunday resulted in a few changes for the A Main starting grid. The top 8 advanced directly in, while 2 had to bump their way into it.
Mark Sweeny entered the final round on top with Drew Ellis close behind while the fastest car of the weekend sat back in the 12th spot. Steve Smith had not yet completed a race going into the final round, but his performance while he was on the track had many expecting him to steal that TQ spot. In the first round of qualifying before dropping out during the first pit stop, Steve was on a blistering TQ pace that included an average lap time that was as fast as all other racers single fastest lap in any round! Unfortunately for Steve, his troubles continued into the final round as he ran out of gas on the final lap and had to settle for the 4th qualifying spot. Randy Ramsey kept his spot in 3rd ahead of Steve Smith while Greg Schmidt improved on his best run in the final round and was able to hang on to the 5th position. This bumped me (Scott McDonald) down to 6th after someone set off a small nuclear device inside of my motor, while Howard Bortman was able to move up a spot to 7th qualifier and Ken Schueler clinched the final automatic spot in the final.
Drew had a great final round, but came up just short of Mugen driver Mark Sweeny who started qualifying in the first heat of the weekend with a TQ run that held up through 4 rounds. He didn't just sit back and watch that great run hang on though, instead he put on a dominating show by running the fastest time in every qualifying round!
The final two spots in the final were filled by Mike Saputo and Mark Zitzlsperger who bumped up from the B.

The start of the final was delayed by a false start that included a wreck that collected the 2nd qualifier Drew Ellis and chunked his tire. After a quick tire change, the final was restarted. Unfortunately Drew quickly realized that he had more damage to his car than he thought and had to return to the pits before completing a lap.
After lining up 4th on the grid, Kyosho driver Steve Smith came around and crossed the line with the lead for the first lap followed by Mugen driver and TQ, Mark Sweeny. 3rd qualifier Randy Ramsey crossed in 3rd followed by Ken Schueler, Howard Bortman, Scott McDonald, Greg Schmidt, Mark Zitzlsperger, Mike Saputo, and finally after a lengthy stay in the pits, Drew Ellis crossed the line in 10th.
Steve waisted no time at all by distancing himself from Mark by 11 seconds by the first pit stop, while Mark had no room for mistakes with Scott McDonald less than 1 second behind him in 3rd. That quickly changed as Scott found himself in for a long 1st pit stop to adjust a hot motor dropping him to 4th and moving Greg Schmidt into the 3rd position. Meanwhile Drew, who had been slowly working his way through the field, now found himself in 5th when Randy Ramsey was forced to retire with mechanical issues after spending the first 4 minutes running in 3rd.
Scott was able to get back around Greg a few laps later to take back the 3rd spot, but a few laps before the 2nd pit stop, his car had to be carried back to the pits with more motor problems. This put Greg back in 3rd with Drew now hot on his tail and just 4 laps later, Drew made the pass and took over 3rd.
By this time, it was obvious that this race had become a battle for 3rd on back, as Steve had already lapped the field and Mark was trying to do the same with everyone else. Drew slowly pulled away from Greg, but 49 laps in, he had to pull off once again where he spent the next 5 minutes wrenching and watching his chance for a podium disappear. This left Greg and Scott running 3rd and 4th until Scott got around Greg on lap 76 to take 3rd back. Once again, it would be short lived as Scott had to pull off again 5 laps later with motor issues. This moved Ken Schueler into the 4th position behind Greg and dropped Scott to 5th where they ran out the rest of the race. Howard was able to make a late pass on Mark Z. with 5 laps to go to finish 6th while Mike Saputo held on to 8th ahead of Drew and Randy.
So after 45 minutes and 151 laps, Steve Smith (Kyosho) took the win followed by Mark Sweeny (Mugen), and Greg Schmidt in 3rd.
Congratulations to all of you and thank you to the RC Pro Series and their sponsors for putting on a great race at Evolution Raceway.

Scott
